Tom Hudson: Emily Carr Foundation Lectures

The audio recordings below make up a series of three hour Foundation lectures delivered by Tom Hudson, Dean of Instruction at the Emily Carr College of Art + Design (ECCAD).

Although it’s audio only, Tom is giving a slideshow with these talks. The setup was usually two slide projectors side by side from the projection room at the back of the room (you’ll hear him refer to images on the left and right).

ECCAD Drawing Lecture, 1987

This lecture covers drawing and 2D language from ancient man, through early childhood development, through classical and renaissance developments (wherein Tom also describes his own art academy style of training and tests), followed by post-impressionist and cubist developments, and then the relationship of artist to modern technology. He covers a lot of ground.

ECCAD Creative Process Lecture, 1987

This lecture provides a historical overview of the creative role of artists and designers, starting with the Renaissance, and covering aspects of creative process and response in various media by famous artists in the Victorian and Modern ages.

Tom describes his involvement with the Fluxus Group in New York, his performance pieces in Vancouver in the 1980s, and consulting projects with industrial designers and engineers on large-scale environmental pieces (via UNESCO). Finally, Tom exhorts his student audience to feel empowered and hopeful as future artists and designers, and to take an active, participatory role in effecting positive change in their society.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing these! My mother is an Emily Carr graduate (in the late 1970s) and any time she had the opportunity to hear Dr Hudson speak she would take it. Do you know where, if anywhere, copies of Mark & Image can be purchased? I’ve searched high and low on the internet but keep hitting brick walls (it seems like TRU may use them as course material but I’m unwilling to shell out $600-$900 for them!)

    Many thanks.

    1. Hi Emily,
It’s nice to hear about someone else for whom Tom’s teaching resonated! I’ve heard that everyone will meet someone who is the one great teacher in their life, be it a parent, spiritual leader, or a teacher or mentor. Tom was a very special teacher/mentor to me during and after my education.

As far as I know, Mark and Image and the other telecourses in the series are not for sale anywhere. I think the only way you’d get to see them is to take (or audit?) the online courses through TRU. TRU is the legal rights-holder of the material (assumed/bought rights when they took over from Open University). My few copies of episodes were recorded to old-school VHS during the original on-air broadcasts. I don’t think it would be legal for me to put my recordings online… I believe that all Tom’s telecourses are also available for review at the Emily Carr University library – at least they used to be back when it was down on Granville Island.

      I hope that is helpful!
