She never discussed it or made any reference to it, but I think it must have been difficult to be permanently scarred. In high school and through her early adult years, Angela had been a singer and performer, and had been praised for her beauty.

I’ve often wondered how much that injury must have hurt her or damaged her confidence. In this letter to her parents, Angela has only recently returned home from the hospital, her burns still bandaged. She sounds fairly upbeat, but I do sense reluctance when she contemplates being around (or seen by) others, in her first days back at home.

Oct. 14, 1964

My dear Mum and Dad,

Gee thanks for phoning last evening, just wonderful talking to you again. I’m sorry for not writing last week but it was a funny experience. I really didn’t know where to sit to write a letter.

In the hospital there’s only one place, bed, but coming home, I wanted to be someplace else, and until “Liz” brought her table and stool over, I just didn’t have the inclination, now it’s different.

Everything you sent is so beautiful and fits to a “T” . The suit is my (favourite). (I can’t) remember when I’ve had anything to wear I have liked so much. The blouse is perfect with it.

I guess I’m a true size eighteen. I hate to admit it. However, I did lose 14 lbs in the hospital. I was 155 when I left.

Remember Mom when I got weighed with you at the Owl Drugstore. Ouch. Oh well, maybe one day I will reach the 140 mark again.

Jim has been home with me until today. It sure was a help. I am feeling extremely well. My right arm is free of bandages entirely. The worst thing I can say is that it looks blotchy and that’s pretty good.

My left arm is almost healed, doesn’t look as pretty with the grafting but that is to be expected and time will improve the picture.

Our cat left for parts unknown. I don’t feel too badly because I know cats do wander. I rather miss the little rascal.

October 15, 1964

Sorry this didn’t get mailed yesterday but today for sure.

Jim is back at work today. I am managing very well, in fact I even went out for coffee this morning. Gladys Keller, one of our neighbours, invited me, in fact almost insisted – said I was staying in the house too much. The people on avenue are wonderful Mom and Dad. They have certainly gone out of their way to help Jim and I.

Jim will be home soon and it’s almost noon so I will say bye for now so he can mail this on his way back to work.

Thanks again for everything you have done, and especially all those wonderful letters.

All My Love Angela
xxxxxxxxxx
ooooooooo

All mine too, Jim.
xoxoxoxo

Before I was born, my mother suffered terrible burns in a house fire, requiring skin grafts to her arms and face.
